According to the latest report, new research claims that 650,000 Apple App Store apps have not been updated in more than two years, while the Google Play Store has 869,000 such “abandoned” apps.
Apple recently announced that it would be taking down apps that haven’t been updated recently, and subsequently extended the deadline for developer updates. Now a research firm surveyed the App Store and Google Play Store to see how many apps haven’t been updated for a long time.
Pixelate research, which took snapshots of both app stores on March 31, 2022, describes an app as deprecated if it hasn’t been updated for more than two years. If the app hasn’t been updated in five years or more, it calls the app “super obsolete.”
According to its data, 33% of apps have not been updated for two years or more. Another 11% or more than 500,000 apps have not been updated in more than four years. About 314,000 apps were last updated five years or more ago. Of these, 58% or 184,000 apps are in the App Store, compared to 130,000 apps in the Google Play Store.
Certain categories of applications proved more likely to be abandoned. In terms of numbers, games topped the list with 50,000 games that haven’t been updated in nearly two years, with 44,000 educational apps and 31,000 identical reference apps.
Likewise, apps that are most likely to be updated also fall into specific categories. Financial apps are the most likely to be upgraded by volume, with 69,000 updates in the past six months. About 72,000 shopping apps have also been updated since September 30, 2021. 64,000 health apps have since been updated.
Moreover, Pixalate said there was a clear “positive link” between app updates and download frequency. The company reports that 84% of apps with more than 100 million downloads were updated within the past six months.
Failure to update an app does not necessarily indicate that it has been abandoned. It may be that the app does not need to be updated. Except that Apple introduced its App Privacy Label in December 2020 and required developers to update their app descriptions with this information.
Apps that don’t meet the minimum download threshold for 12 consecutive months and haven’t been updated for three years will be purged from the App Store, although Apple doesn’t specify the minimum threshold.
Furthermore, Apple said this is to provide users with a better App Store experience. By removing old, obsolete, or obsolete applications, it hopes to provide better discoverability for actively maintained applications.
Additionally, make sure apps comply with App Store security and privacy guidelines, which Apple notes are “evolving.” Apple also expects these apps to meet a certain level of quality.
