Apple App Store, Google Play Store includes more than 1.5 million ‘abandoned apps’

Published

on

According to the latest report, new research claims that 650,000 Apple App Store apps have not been updated in more than two years, while the Google Play Store has 869,000 such “abandoned” apps.

Apple recently announced that it would be taking down apps that haven’t been updated recently, and subsequently extended the deadline for developer updates. Now a research firm surveyed the App Store and Google Play Store to see how many apps haven’t been updated for a long time.

Pixelate research, which took snapshots of both app stores on March 31, 2022, describes an app as deprecated if it hasn’t been updated for more than two years. If the app hasn’t been updated in five years or more, it calls the app “super obsolete.”

According to its data, 33% of apps have not been updated for two years or more. Another 11% or more than 500,000 apps have not been updated in more than four years. About 314,000 apps were last updated five years or more ago. Of these, 58% or 184,000 apps are in the App Store, compared to 130,000 apps in the Google Play Store.

Certain categories of applications proved more likely to be abandoned. In terms of numbers, games topped the list with 50,000 games that haven’t been updated in nearly two years, with 44,000 educational apps and 31,000 identical reference apps.

Likewise, apps that are most likely to be updated also fall into specific categories. Financial apps are the most likely to be upgraded by volume, with 69,000 updates in the past six months. About 72,000 shopping apps have also been updated since September 30, 2021. 64,000 health apps have since been updated.

Moreover, Pixalate said there was a clear “positive link” between app updates and download frequency. The company reports that 84% of apps with more than 100 million downloads were updated within the past six months.

Failure to update an app does not necessarily indicate that it has been abandoned. It may be that the app does not need to be updated. Except that Apple introduced its App Privacy Label in December 2020 and required developers to update their app descriptions with this information.

Apps that don’t meet the minimum download threshold for 12 consecutive months and haven’t been updated for three years will be purged from the App Store, although Apple doesn’t specify the minimum threshold.

Furthermore, Apple said this is to provide users with a better App Store experience. By removing old, obsolete, or obsolete applications, it hopes to provide better discoverability for actively maintained applications.

Additionally, make sure apps comply with App Store security and privacy guidelines, which Apple notes are “evolving.” Apple also expects these apps to meet a certain level of quality. The company has made it clear that all apps should work with all modern screen sizes, SDKs, APIs, and other features available in the iOS and macOS ecosystems.

If the user has downloaded an “outdated” application, it will not be removed from the user’s device or account. It’s unclear what Google’s criteria are for removing apps from their Play Store.

Apple Maps update does satisfy Unique Selling Proposition markings

Apple Maps update does satisfy Unique Selling Proposition markings

Apple introduced its latest update iOS 15.4. with various unique features, rolling in all the iPhone models, this update had become the talk of the town, the recent 15.4.1 update has even brought down many discrepancies that were present in the previous version, though Apple mentioning Maps as a new feature is a little overboard talk, for encountering the app first-hand does not give out any specialty which can land it in Unique Selling proposition of the brand.

Are these features really new?

Interactive Globe: As the brand mentions about added feature for a better view of mountain ranges, oceans, and deserts an evolved version of MAPS, can be countered by the logic that we aren’t planning a world tour on Apple Maps, the previous update that delivered the new 3D view was something fascinating though this time it’s the same old road.

  • Detailed New City Experience:

the mention of cities like San Francisco, LA, NY, and London gives me a general idea that Apple is focusing more on its western market than targeting the Asian Market which is the largest for Consumer Electronics in the globe, this too is not worth mentioning as users have already had enough experience with such detailing from the previous update.

  • New Driving Features:

Apple has mentioned quite an interesting feature with the latest update of viewing traffic and incidents, at a time when it gets criticized for being a step back from google maps in providing real-time analysis is quite ironic, though the feature of adding upcoming journey and setting its route can be appreciated.

  • All New Place Cards:

I don’t believe such a trivial feature can actually be counted as one of the updates, though they had a great alignment of thought to bring out the creativity in place cards of Maps, yet it’ll still be tough to point out whether this is a remarkable update, so appreciating it would be a tad difficult.

All these updates I believe are yet lacking if we consider them to be presented as a Unique Selling Proposition of the brand, though bringing such changes must have been a work of intense efforts and dedication to bring out the best in iPhones, and is thus appreciated.

User’s point of view

The exclusive reward for new customers sounds appealing. But it does not provide anything to the person referring to the ultimate offer. Comparatively, this is a quite different regulation from other companies that reward both, the new users as well as the person referring to the offer.

The email further attaches a link to Apple’s Website. Consumers can jump to the link to grab the fascinating offer which is only accessible for a limited period.
